Plans of the Foundation
Consultant Database in Blood Transfusion and Transfusion Medicine
ISBT receives requests from all over the world to identify healthcare professionals willing to provide training and education particularly on blood transfusion related topics in developing countries. This concerns not only training in the medical field but also in blood donor recruitment, technical aspects of blood banking, financial management, blood testing, safety aspects, quality control, quality assurance, clinical blood transfusion, apheresis and more. One of the initial steps of the Foundation will be to fund the setting up of a consultant database of those members of ISBT prepared to make a contribution to education. The Foundation will survey all members of ISBT to determine who is willing and able to become involved in education and training. It will determine skill sets including language and other skills so that those who wish to be involved can be called upon to participate in important initiatives to help the achievement of the objectives of the Foundation.
International Academy of Transfusion Medicine
Training and education in blood banking and transfusion medicine is fundamental to creating a safe, functional health care system. Blood plays a vital role in the treatment of many disorders and even now many patients still die due to the shortage of blood or due to the poor quality of blood products. In many parts of the world the knowledge of clinical usage of blood is inadequate. The creation of the International Academy of Blood Transfusion Medicine by the Foundation will provide structured programmes of education, training courses and seminars in order to broaden the scope of transfusion medicine worldwide. Today 80% of the world’s resources being spent on blood transfusions are serving only 20% of the world’s population. Funding is urgently needed to address and rectify this important global dilemma.Click here for more information about the IATM.
